Description: 

Provides Forensic Biology and Toxicology majors with practical experience in crime scene investigation with the Western Australian Police (WAPOL). It includes one week of intensive training in crime scene analysis followed by three weeks of full-time attendance at a Police Division. This involves participation in actual crime cases and project work as directed by the WAPOL supervisor. Students are required to maintain a journal of cases attended and are subjected to workplace assessment by the WAPOL supervisor.

Contact time: 40 hours per week for 4 weeks.
Due to the nature of offering this unit students are recommended to seek confirmation of the exact attendance dates and requirements from the Unit Coordinator closer to the commencement date of the teaching period.

Prerequisites: 

Participation is by invitation; enrolment in the Forensic Biology and Toxicology major; completion of all Part I requirements and at least 36 points at Part II; current certificates of vaccination for Hepatitis B and Tetanus. A Police security clearance will be undertaken and participants must submit themselves to psychological profiling.

Notes: 

Selection into the unit is by a panel consisting of Murdoch University personnel and officers from the Western Australian Police Forensic Division.

Students who have successfully completed a unit may not enrol for credit in any subsequent version of that unit, even if under a different code and/or title, nor in any parallel lower- or higher-level version. Students enrolled in a higher-level version of a unit are required to demonstrate advanced analytical skills and/or use of advanced research tools in assignments modified for that level.

Cancellation of Courses, Minors and Units
The University reserves the right to cancel, without notice, any course, major, minor or unit if the number of students enrolled falls below limits set by the University.
