Katrina O'Mara of the Australian Cooperative Research Centre for Renewable
Energy (ACRE) has set herself the "huge task" of sifting through
all the World Wide Web sites on renewable energy education.
"There are about 7.8 million web sites
on renewable energy and 3348 on renewable energy education," Ms O'Mara
said. ACRE, which is based at Murdoch University, has embarked on a research project that will help school teachers find useful information and resource material on the subject of renewable energy. She said there was no consistent language used in the field and little classification in the creation of web pages. Even the term renewable energy or sustainable energy was not universally understood, she said. "My sister lives on a boat in New Zealand. The boat has a solar panel on it and so do each of the nearby boats, but she said she'd never heard of 'renewable energy'," said Ms O'Mara. After sifting through the world's web pages, she will evaluate the best ones and try to create a "one-stop shop" for educators.
