$1 million machine

Murdoch’s new $1 million mass spectrometer has the power to scan the uppermost atoms of a surface.
Professor of Chemistry John Webb, Professor of Physics Steve Thurgate and Murdoch's Vice Chancellor Steven Schwartz unveil the $1 million spectrometer.
Housed in the physical sciences building the new X-ray photoelectron mass spectrometer will be used for scientific research and by industry, particularly mining.
A consortium of Murdoch, the AJ Parker Centre for Hydrometallurgy, the University of Western Australia, and Curtin and Edith Cowan Universities used a Commonwealth Research Infrastrucure Equipment and Faciltities Grant to buy the machine.
It is one of only four of the latest generation spectrometers in Australia. The others are at La Trobe, the University of New South Wales and BHP (Port Kembla).
