Collaboration with Uruguay |

The Centre for Rhizobium Studies based at Murdoch has forged links with researchers in Uruguay to investigate how the root nodule bacteria on legumes fix nitrogen in the soil. The Uruguayan work on rhizobium is particularly interesting for WA researchers because it has concentrated on legumes and rhizobia in acid soils. In March two scientists from INIA, Uruguays equivalent of the CSIRO, visited the Centre at Murdoch, including a tour of the new $330,000 state-of-the-art controlled environment glasshouse where our local research is being undertaken. The glasshouse was officially opened in March by representatives from the federal Grain Research Development Corporation, which contributed $230,000 to the building. Professor John Howieson (right), Director of the Centre for Rhizobium Studies, gives Uruguayan visitor Dr Diego Risso a tour of the new facilities.
