A dream come true |

Indonesian engineer and academic Suriptono dreams about toilets.
His dream is to see millions of them all over his homeland, instead of non-existent or sub-standard ablution facilities. The dream is a driving force for him now that he has introduced the first small-scale waste treatment facility to his home town in East Java. His dream will see thousands of these systems built across the land as part of a grand national public works programme. But the first step in this saga was a personal one. In 1995 Suriptono decided to leave his position as Dean of Engineering at Merdeka Universtiy in East Java to become a student again. He came to Murdoch University to study environmental science in order to fulfil his dream. I wanted to find out simple ways to overcome our problem. Not just the perfect ways, but ones that were applicable. I wanted to see a real solution for my people. After three years study, research and work on the project with Murdochs Institute for Science and Technology Policy (ISTP) he has developed the solution. Now he can see the mission before him. I want the small-scale community technology system to be popular in my own town, then introduce it to local government and then for it to become a national project, he said.
