'Talk to the humans' hones Vets' skillsA new series of teaching videos was launched recently by Murdoch University to assist veterinary students in coping with stressful situations when dealing with their future clients. Entitled 'Talk to the Humans Communication Skills for the Veterinarian', the four, half-hour videotapes depict different aspects of communication in veterinary practice, including handling stressful situations, consultations, grief and euthanasia, and communication. They were produced in conjunction with Murdoch's Teaching and Learning Centre. Murdoch Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Clinical Pathology, Dr Jenny Mills, said the videos which contain documentary and drama scenarios came about after the completion of a national survey of veterinary practitioners in 1998. "The survey sought to discover the major criteria used by veterinary employers in hiring new graduates in veterinary practice," said Dr Mills. "Some of this information is intended to demonstrate to students the importance employers place on interpersonal communication skills in their staff. It is also intended to assist new graduates in job applications and in their successful transition into veterinary practice."
