Australia’s first degree in Renewable Energy

Murdoch’s School of Engineering launched Australia’s first Bachelor’s degree in Renewable Energy in August.

The new degree will produce graduates who can design, construct and operate energy systems using renewable resources such as wind, solar, biomass, hydro or geothermal energy.

“Students will focus on the design of renewable energy systems which can be integrated into existing installations to ensure the highest levels of energy use, safety, environmental performance and economics,” Deputy Vice Chancellor Jeff Gawthorne said.

“The new degree will help create a skilled workforce for the industry, will enhance the balance and content of Murdoch’s energy engineering curriculum and will assist Western Power to make practical use of renewable energy technologies.

“Renewable energy systems such as remote area power supplies and grid-connected systems at the Rockingham campus, at the Murdoch University Energy Research Institute, the Australian Cooper-ative Research Centre for Renewable Energy at Murdoch and visits to industrial sites, will provide hands-on experience for students.

Murdoch is widely regarded as one of the Australian leaders in renewable energy, with research including development of advanced systems for energy storage, design and use of renewable energy systems, research into greenhouse issues and transport energy use.

The degree has been developed in close collaboration with Western Power, the Alternative Energy Development Board, the University of New South Wales and the energy industry.

Murdoch is keen to strengthen its links with industry in renewable energy engineering and is seeking further industry involvement in the ongoing development of the new degree.
