POSTGRADUATE study is becoming an increasingly accessible way for media industry veterans to share the value of their experience with other journalists. Dr Gail Phillips, Head of Murdochs School of Media Communications and Culture (MCC), said postgraduate study gives industry practitioners a chance to reflect on their years in the business. Industry people can undertake research projects which enable them to use their industry knowledge and contacts to provide unique insights into the issues and challenges the media face in the modern world, she said. They give an added dimension to academic research while at the same time producing work that can have a real impact on industry practices, especially in the area of journalism. As well as the three seasoned journalists recruited into postgraduate study at MCC this year, the newly established Graduate Diploma in Media Management has already gathered considerable interest. This diploma enables industry practitioners to translate their hands-on experience as media managers into an accredited qualification, said Dr Phillips. This joint MCC/BITL (Business, IT and Law) qualification fills a gap in the training market by equipping broadcast managers, who often rise from the ranks with no formal management training, the chance to apply management theory to their specific media organisations. |
