Gut-wrenching pain eased for stressed-out horses
Gut-wrenching pain eased for stressed-out horses

Cristy Secombe, Registrar, uses the new equipment on horse Towie assisted by Resident Vet Guy Alexander.

THE Murdoch Veterinary School recently took possession of its new, advanced, equine gastroscopy equipment.

The only equipment of its kind in WA, the gastroscopes will be used to check for gastric ulcers in domestic and thoroughbred horses.

A recent Australian study found gastric ulcers in up to 89 per cent of all thoroughbred racehorses.

In affected horses, clinical signs include poor appetite, poor condition, poor racing performance, attitude changes and mild to severe colic.

The gastroscope equipment is sponsored by Eclipse Resources and Multiplex Constructions Pty Ltd who have both contributed $5000 towards its purchase.
