International maritime spotlight on PerthAn international conference Maritime History Beyond 2000: Visions Of Sea And Shore was held at the Fremantle Maritime Museum in December 2001. Historians and maritime specialists from Australia and around the world presented papers on topics including the Australian stevedoring industry, Greek and Australian fishing traditions, child labour in the Philippines fishing industry and women in maritime communities. Other areas examined included Australian water police, shipping lanes in the Baltic, a new theory for Victorias mahogany Ship, the impact of North Sea oil on Denmark, modern German naval policy, fishing with explosives in Sabah, and globalisation and maritime training. The conference hosted meetings of the Councils of the International Commission for Maritime History and the International Maritime Economic History Association. It was organised by Associate Professor Malcolm Tull from Murdoch Universitys School of Economics.
