International conference stimulates tourism debate

A MAJOR international research conference entitled Tourism and Hospitality on the Edge was held at Fremantle’s Esplanade Hotel in February.

Co-organised by the Murdoch Tourism Program’s Dr Jim Macbeth and Dr Diane Lee, the four-day conference was attended by about 200 people.

Held in association with Curtin and Edith Cowan Universities for the Council for Australian University Tourism and Hospitality Education (CAUTHE), the Division of Social Sciences, Humanities and Education (SSHE) was also a major sponsor.

Indeed, said Dr Macbeth, the SSHE Executive Dean, Professor Kateryna Longley, gave a well-received talk at the ‘Women in Tourism’ breakfast and the Division also provided a boat to transport VIPs to the conference dinner.

Conference highlights included a televised panel discussion on: “Why is tourism on the edge”, a debate on tourism entitled “In the midst of World Chaos, Tourism is not on the Edge; it is on the Nose”.

Session topics ranged from tourism policy and planning, tourism economics and regional tourism to marine and adventure tourism, cultural, heritage and Indigenous tourism and tourism image and education.

Other conference delegates included Murdoch University postgraduate students and international visitors from Denmark, the UK, New Zealand and North America.

Dr Macbeth said the Murdoch Tourism Program - a member of the national Co-operative Research Centre for Sustainable Tourism - had played an important part in the conference with members presenting seven papers in all.

Murdoch Environmental Science lecturers Dr Sue Moore and David Newsome also used the conference to launch their new book ‘Aspects of Tourism’, co-authored with Edith Cowan Associate Professor of Tourism Ross Dowling, who was also the conference convenor.

Dr Newsome said the book broke new ground in the management of tourism in natural areas.
