MURDOCH University has selected Professor John Yovich as its next Vice Chancellor.In announcing the appointment, the Universitys Chancellor, the Hon Fred Chaney AO, said Professor Yovich epitomised Murdochs outstanding strengths in both teaching and research. He has the skills and experience to lead the University into an exciting period of innovation, growth and development at a time of great change for higher education in Australia and overseas, said Mr Chaney. I am confident the Universitys proven strengths in teaching and research will be reinforced by John Yovichs commitment to Murdoch, and his demonstrated ability to get results in the increasingly tough environment in which modern universities find themselves. Murdochs current Vice Chancellor, Professor Mal Nairn, said he had watched Professor Yovichs career go from strength to strength, identifying him as one of Australias most dynamic young academic leaders. His leadership of Murdochs School of Veterinary Sciences and emerging School of Health Sciences has brought national and international recognition for excellence in teaching and research, said Professor Nairn. As a long-time member of the Universitys senior executive he has also played a significant role in University-wide strategic planning and policy, and has been a strong supporter of the social sciences and humanities disciplines. John Yovichs demonstrable skills and experience in scholarship and higher education administration, combined with his strength of purpose and commitment to Murdoch, augur well for the University as it continues to develop as one of Australias outstanding universities. Professor Yovich, who is currently Executive Dean of the Division of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences at Murdoch University, said he was honoured and delighted by the appointment and looked forward to the challenge ahead. Murdoch is poised for a very productive future. With its extraordinary research performance and award-winning teachers I am confident that in the coming years, the University will become an even more prominent and influential, multi-campus university, embracing sound environmental principles and further enhancing existing teaching quality and research excellence, said Professor Yovich. With an international reputation as a distinguished veterinary researcher, and with extensive leadership experience in public organisations and universities, Professor Yovich has also won numerous international academic awards. |
