Four bright young WA biomedical scientists rewarded for their efforts

Four of Perth's brightest young biomedical scientists have received scholarships from the Western Australian Biomedical Research Institute (WABRI) under its recently announced Macquarie Bank Fellowship Program.

Over the next four years, the $500,000 Macquarie Bank Fellowship Program ? funded jointly by WABRI partners Curtin and Murdoch Universities, and by the Macquarie Bank Foundation ? will support a Senior Research Fellow, three postgraduate scholars and nine Honours scholars.

Each of the WABRI Honours Student Scholarship winners received a personal cheque for $1000 and support for their research projects of $1,500.

"These young scientists demonstrated terrific achievement through their university studies and have undertaken a year of research that should prepare them for post-graduate studies in any of Australia's best universities," said Professor Carroll, Director of WABRI.

"They should be congratulated on their results."

The four young achievers are Hannah Moore, Jemma Donovan, Irene King and Phillip John.

Hannah and Phillip are currently conducting research at the Institute for Child Health Research in the areas of Rett's Syndrome and gene regulation in allergies.

Irene and Jemma are investigating aspects of cancer development at Murdoch University and Curtin University of Technology.

In making the awards, Mr Edward Tait, Chairman of the WABRI Board of Management applauded the efforts of the students.

"We encourage them to broaden their horizons and their careers through travel, and return to Perth, bringing their experiences back to enrich the science base," Mr Tait said.
