Centre for Medical Engineering - now at Murdoch University

ARCME is a training and research facility for the application of engineering and information technology in medicine.

It works in the areas of diagnostics, therapeutics and information systems with the aim of developing an internationally competitive medical engineering industry in WA.

Established in 1999, the Centre was approved as a Centre of Excellence by the WA Government and was initially located at the University of Western Australia. It has now been extended to Murdoch University.

Its mission is to generate innovative medical and engineering solutions that improve community health by undertaking collaborative multidisciplinary research and build a financially self-sustaining centre that is able to exploit research outcomes arising from participants.

With Murdoch's Executive Dean for Science and Engineering, Professor Yianni Attikiouzel at the helm, the Centre will house five staff and some PhD students.

Some of the research activities currently undertaken by ARCME include radiologists' computer-aided diagnosis, mammographic image analysis, limb shape and volume measuring device, finger manipulation device, microwave heating of tumours, analysis of digitised lateral fluoroscopy images, integral theory diagnostic system and telemedicine demonstrator.
