Battling HIV

Launched in 2000, the Centre for Clinical Immunology and Biomedical Statistics focuses on the mechanisms and complications in HIV infection and its associated treatments that directly impact on improved patient management and drug development.

The Centre, which is a joint initiative between Murdoch University and Royal Perth Hospital has already attracted considerable funds from granting bodies such as the NH&MRC.

Current projects include:

  • Long term toxicity studies
  • Effects of genetic changes on the natural history of HIV
  • Treatment hypersensitivity
  • Effect of treatments on metabolism

Recent work on abacavir hypersensitivity was fast tracked in Lancet and work on viral escape was published in March in the prestigious Science journal in 2001.
