Indigenous tourism development boosted in South West

A new case study analysis from a Nyungar perspective focusing on Indigenous Tourism in the South West Region of Western Australia has recently got underway at Murdoch University.

The research project, headed by Murdoch Aboriginal and Islander Studies' Chair Len Collard, seeks to create a southern Australian Indigenous Tourism inventory that emphasises distinct regional tourism characteristics and preferences.

"This would be the first academic research undertaking of its kind in this area," said Mr Collard.

"We are working to establish a series of case studies and best practice scenarios highlighting regional opportunities and identifying relevant partnerships that support Nyungar tourist development both from mainstream and Aboriginal partners."

Mr Collard is also seeking to establish a web site to act as a WA resource for Indigenous tourism operations.

The web site will include relevant links to existing databases such as Aboriginal Traders Alliance (NSW) and Aboriginal Art and Culture Centre (NT).

A number of participants recently took part in a preliminary workshop at Murdoch to introduce them to the project.
