Work experience a success for WA government

AN innovative work experience program for MBA students at Murdoch University has enabled them to contribute to some leading edge WA Government Telecommunication Projects.

For the first time in WA, final year or recently graduated MBA students participated in a University-sponsored work experience program for four months under the guidance of Adjunct Professor Walter Green.

“One of the major contributing factors to the success of the program was that students could apply the leading edge telecommunications management methodologies learned during their course. They also gained practice at applying project management techniques within their groups,” said Professor Green.

The teams were required to apply their Project Management skills and to provide regular progress reports to the Steering Committee supervising the projects.

“This program not only consolidated the knowledge of the students and gained them valuable experience, but also produced information that was really useful to the WA government,” said Professor Green.

The student teams worked on four projects, developing a basis for further research into ways to reduce telecommunication costs and integrate systems across the State.

“The participating government departments gained insight into new possibilities for the use and management of telecommunication services in WA, and the work has formed the basis for future projects in the area,” said Professor Green.

“The program was so popular with the students that we had participants taking leave from their normal workplace to join in.“We will use this program as an innovative new model for mentoring MBA students and hope to start another group at the end of this year.”
