THE world class facilities and education at Murdoch University’s Veterinary School were recently recognised through accreditation by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Murdoch University is the first Australian veterinary school to achieve this accreditation. “Accreditation with the AVMA is a recognition of excellence at an international level that puts Murdoch’s Veterinary School at the forefront of veterinary education,” said Professor John Bolton, Dean of Murdoch’s School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences. “Through accreditation with the AVMA, we are able to open up new career opportunities for our students, through the automatic recognition of their degree in the United States and Canada.” “Armed with their veterinary qualifications from Murdoch University, our graduates can now work throughout North America, as well as in Australia, the United Kingdom and Malaysia. “Accreditation with the AVMA will make Murdoch’s veterinary program more attractive to international students and will have long term benefits for all graduates.” Professor Bolton said the process of accreditation has been intense, with every aspect of the school scrutinised over a two year period, including interviews with staff, graduates and students and an extensive inspection of facilities and the teaching program. “We were complimented on the quality and professionalism of our students and the innovative curriculum of the degree, which includes rotations at the Perth Zoo and the Department of Agriculture,” said Professor Bolton. “The Board was also very impressed with Murdoch’s world class facilities including the campus farm at the fingertips of students. Vice Chancellor Professor John Yovich said it was a great achievement for Murdoch University and commended the efforts of the Veterinary School staff and those throughout the university involved in the process. “International accreditation of veterinarians is important for Australia’s primary industries in a competitive word trade environment. For Murdoch University the value and prestige of its veterinary degree has been enhanced”. |
