Masters Degree heralds a new era of collaboration

(Professor Pat Garnett, Professor Peter Lee, Professor Dennis Haskell, Associate Professor Michael Borowitzka and Professor Yianni Attikiouzel celebrated the launch of the new Masters program.

WA’s four public universities (Murdoch University, the University of WA, Curtin University and Edith Cowan University) have broken new ground with the launch of the first truly collaborative masters degree in Australia.

Launched at Murdoch in early August, students of the Masters of Medical Engineering will tap into the best expertise in the State in different areas during their one year degree, with equally weighted units offered at each of the four universities.

“There is growing demand for people who are conversant with the increasingly high levels of technology in the medical field,” said Professor Yianni Attikiouzel, Executive Dean of the Division of Science and Engineering.

“We have been developing this course since 2001 and the significant administrative challenges have been solved through a lot of good will on all sides.

“Our individual resources and capabilities have been combined to create a great degree, which will help Western Australia to gain a foothold in the growing area of medical engineering.”

Professor Attikiouzel said that the course was a pioneer in the field, with universities in two other parts of Australia examining the feasibility of developing similar courses.
