Conference concentrates on biodiversity

The significant contribution that can be made by biotechnology to ensure the preservation of Australia's unique biodiversity will be a focus of the second Asia-Pacific Conference on Biotechnology to be held in Perth later this year.
The Conference will be conducted at the Sheraton Perth Hotel, from 23-27 November, 1998.
The theme for the Conference is 'Biodiversity, Biotechnology and Biobusiness'.
"The unique terrestrial and marine biodiversity of Western Australia should be of immense interest to visitors from overseas and interstate," said Conference Organising Committee Chair Associate Professor Michael Borowitzka.
The Conference will focus on scientific and conservation issues, and the application of new biotechnologies. The beneficial use and sustainable exploitation of the biodiversity of the region, and social and legal issues of access and ownership will also be discussed.
The Conference is being hosted by the WA Branch of the Australian Biotechnology Association, in collaboration with Murdoch University's School of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology, the Department for Conservation and Land Management (CALM) and the Australian Biological Resources Study.
