The Centre for Labour Market Research has been officially relocated to Murdoch University after an absence of more than 11 years.
The Centre -- a consortium of WA's four public universities -- contains the largest local group of labour market specialists in Australia.
In the past five years it has produced some 200 publications -- books, chapters, articles, discussion papers and reports -- and received about $200,000 per year in research income -- mainly through Commonwealth and other Government grants.
Centre for Labour Market Research Director Associate Professor Phil Lewis said the Centre's research focused on applied policy issues, particularly for Government, but also for business and trade unions.
"We carry out extensive research in a number of areas including unemployment, immigration and international movements of labour, economics of education and vocational training," said Professor Lewis.

| "The Centre has received a substantial grant from the Commonwealth Department of Social Security to examine the labour market status of welfare recipients." |

"For example, the WA Department of Training has sponsored us with $25,000 this year. This money will finance the studies of Murdoch Honours researcher Ross Kelly, who is spending two years studying part-time on various projects linked with the Centre and the Department of Training.
"The Centre has also received a substantial $65,000 grant from the Commonwealth Department of Social Security to examine the labour market status of welfare recipients."
Professor Lewis said Western Australia had the largest number of labour economists of any state in Australia.
"Currently more than 15 academics -- Research Associates -- are involved with the Centre, from the four affiliated universities" he said.
Four interstate research associateships have also been created to involve prominent Eastern States labour economists and to provide an important link to the rest of the Australian labour market.
The Centre also runs regular seminars for academics and practitioners -- often in cooperation with other organisations -- including the Bureau of Immigration and Population Research and the Australian Centre for Industrial Relations Research and Teaching.
In 1993 the Centre hosted the Australian Labour Market Research Workshop, the first time it had been held outside of Canberra's Australian National University, and again in 1997.
