Conference targets renewable energy and sustainable development

Murdoch University will host the World Renewable Energy Congress 1999 which will be held in Perth from 10 to 13 February, 1999.
This major regional congress will be the first of its kind to be held in the Southern Hemisphere. Scientists, engineers, policy makers, environmentalists, manufacturers, educators and international development agencies will meet to discuss issues relating to 'Renewable Energy Technologies and Policies for Sustainable Development'.
Murdoch is internationally recognised as a leader in renewable energy technology innovation. It is also the host institution for ACRE -- the Australian Cooperative Research Centre for Renewable Energy.
With its sunny and predominantly cloud-free skies and the highest level of solar insolation, Western Australia is the ideal location to attract a vast number of friends and guests for WREC 1999.
"It is crucial we take this opportunity to focus on the huge opportunities of this dynamic region, and build up the mutually cooperative national and international linkages so necessary to serve it more effectively and sustainably," Congress Chair Mr Martin Thomas said.
The three day congress, focusing on the Asia Pacific region, will showcase the most promising technologies, the best market opportunities and key policy initiatives to facilitate the transition to renewable energy. A host of activities will be held including technical tours, plenary sessions, public forums, innovation processes and conferences.
A number of distinguished speakers will attend including the Director General of the World Renewable Energy Network, Professor Ali Sayigh; the Australian Ambassador for the Environment, Ms Meg MacDonald; and the CEO of Ceramic Fuels Cells Ltd., Dr Bruce Godfrey, who is the Chair of ACRE. Also in attendance will be Professor Bill Charters of the University of Melbourne; the President of the International Association for Solar Energy Education, Professor SC Bhattacharya; and Dr Bruce Walker of the Centre for Appropriate Technology.
Congress details are available in the registration booklet. Registration fees are A$450 for full registration, A$300 for full-time students for Early Bird Registration. The last date for registration is November 30, 1998 and late registration will be charged an additional A$25.
