Sustainable development goes online

AN AUSAID GRANT for $160,000 awarded to Murdoch University's Institute for Science and Technology Policy (ISTP) will be used to develop Australia's first online Masters degree in Asian Sustainable Development.
ISTP Director Professor Peter Newman said the new degree was expected to be underway by next year.
It would combine units from ISTP, Environmental Science, Energy Studies, Tourism and Asian Studies.
"The new degree will focus on case studies from across Asia and be run by ISTP, in conjunction with the Private Sector Linkage Programme and the Indonesian Environment Institute in Jakarta and Surabaya," said Professor Newman.
"The Masters in Asian Sustainable Development will have a strong Indonesian flavour, but will also concentrate on major sustainability issues in Thailand, Malaysia and Bangladesh.
"This grant is an unusually large sum in teaching terms and, with global concern growing over sustainability issues, the potential market for this degree is enormous."
He said being online would negate the need for students to travel to Murdoch, giving them the chance to remain close to the source of their research.
